ChatGPT bug showed some users other people's chat titles and payment details

A software bug let some ChatGPT users see titles from other users' chat history. OpenAI said it may also have exposed payment details (name, email, address, last four card digits) of 1.2% of Plus subscribers active during a nine-hour window.

What went wrong

Nothing the users did. A bug in an open-source library used by the provider mixed up data between accounts. Anything typed into an AI tool is only as safe as that provider's systems.

What to do

  • Assume anything you type into an AI tool could one day be seen by someone else.
  • Never put full client records, SSNs or bank details into a chatbot.
  • Prefer business plans with stronger data commitments, and check your provider's security notices.
