Samsung engineers pasted internal source code into ChatGPT
After employees entered confidential company data into ChatGPT, Samsung banned staff from using generative AI tools on company devices.
What went wrong
Staff used a public chatbot for everyday work (checking code, summarizing material) and pasted in confidential information. Once submitted, that data sat on an outside company's servers, outside Samsung's control.
What to do
- Decide in writing which AI tools staff may use and for what.
- Make a clear 'never paste' list: client names, SSNs, returns, invoices, account numbers.
- Remove or replace identifying details before asking AI for help.
