Shared ChatGPT conversations showed up in Google search results

Conversations that users had shared with a link, and marked as discoverable, were being indexed by Google and other search engines, making them findable by anyone.

What went wrong

Users created share links and ticked an option to make the chat discoverable, often without realizing it could appear in public search results along with whatever personal details were in the chat.

What to do

  • Never use 'share link' features for chats that mention clients or your business.
  • Review and delete old shared links in your AI tool's settings.
  • Teach staff that 'share' can mean 'public'.
